Thesis Statement: The thesis statement is the sentence or two that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about. e.g. There should be an absolute ban against smoking in public because secondhand smoke endangers the health of non-smokers, it's unpleasant to non-smokers and it is bad for tourism to have smokers everywhere.
Evidence: Evidence is the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid.
e.g. In 2007, 158 683 people died from lung cancer.
Anecdote: a short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person.
Quotation: A group of words taken from a text or speech and repeated by someone other than the original author or speaker.
Statistic: A fact or piece of data from a study of a large quantity of numerical data. e.g. Smoking should be banned because it causes 85% of lung cancer deaths.
